• Consultation for General Endocrine Disorders:
o Purpose: Initial evaluation and discussion of symptoms related to potential hormonal imbalances. This includes reviewing medical history, conducting physical examinations, and ordering initial laboratory tests.
Reproductive Endocrinology Consultation (Endocrine Perspective):
• Purpose: Specialized evaluation and management of hormonal imbalances that can impact fertility in both men and women. This includes assessing and treating conditions such as:
o Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): Addressing hormonal irregularities that affect ovulation.
o Hypothalamic Amenorrhea: Evaluating and managing the absence of menstruation due to hormonal signaling issues from the brain.
o Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI): Assessing and managing early loss of ovarian function from an endocrine standpoint.
o Thyroid Disorders: Optimizing thyroid hormone levels for fertility.
o Hyperprolactinemia: Managing elevated prolactin levels that can interfere with ovulation and sperm production.
o Male Hypogonadism: Evaluating and treating low testosterone levels affecting sperm production.
o Adrenal Hyperplasia (Non-classic): Managing adrenal hormone imbalances impacting fertility.
o Other hormonal imbalances affecting the reproductive axis
• Diabetes Management (Type 1 and Type 2):
o Purpose: Diagnosis, education, and ongoing management of diabetes through lifestyle modifications, oral medications, and insulin therapy. This includes blood glucose monitoring guidance and complication screening.
• Thyroid Disorders (Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism, Thyroid Nodules):
o Purpose: Diagnosis and management of underactive or overactive thyroid glands, as well as evaluation of thyroid nodules through physical examination and ordering thyroid function tests and ultrasound referrals. Initiation of thyroid hormone replacement or anti-thyroid medications.
• Parathyroid Disorders (Hyperparathyroidism, Hypoparathyroidism):
o Purpose: Initial evaluation of calcium imbalances and potential parathyroid gland dysfunction through blood tests and referrals for further imaging if needed.
• Adrenal Disorders (Adrenal Insufficiency, Adrenal Nodules):
o Purpose: Initial assessment of symptoms related to adrenal gland dysfunction through blood and urine tests, and evaluation of adrenal nodules with imaging referrals. Initiation of hormone replacement therapy for adrenal insufficiency.
• Pituitary Disorders (Pituitary Tumors, Hormone Deficiencies):
o Purpose: Initial evaluation of symptoms related to pituitary gland dysfunction through hormone testing and referrals for imaging (like MRI).
• Growth Disorders (in Children and Adults):
o Purpose: Assessment of growth abnormalities in children and evaluation of growth hormone deficiency or excess in adults through physical examination and hormone testing.
• Puberty Disorders (Early or Delayed Puberty):
o Purpose: Evaluation of the timing and progression of puberty in adolescents through physical examination and hormone testing.
• Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Management:
o Purpose: Diagnosis and management of PCOS, focusing on hormonal regulation, menstrual irregularities, and associated symptoms like acne and hirsutism. (Note: This overlaps with Gynaecology but endocrine management of PCOS is a key aspect).
• Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) Management (for Menopause and other conditions):
o Purpose: Initiation and ongoing management of hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms and other hormone deficiency states.
• Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disorders:
o Purpose: Diagnosis and management of low bone density and other metabolic bone diseases through bone density scans (DEXA referrals) and medication management.
• Lipid Disorders (High Cholesterol, High Triglycerides):
o Purpose: Diagnosis and management of high cholesterol and triglyceride levels through lifestyle modifications and medication. While often managed by general practitioners, endocrinologists may be involved in complex cases.
